Ship Security Officer (SSO Course)
Ship Security Officer Course (SSO) Plus Designated Security Duties

Introduction

This three day course is designed to meet the mandatory training requirements as defined by the International Ship and Port Security Codes (ISPS) and guidance laid out by SOLAS 1994.

The course will cover mandatory elements for Ship Security Officer’s and for those seeking to work as Maritime Security Operatives (MSO's) on board ships in an anti-piracy role. The course is compliant with the Department for Transports “Interim Guidance to UK Flagged Shipping on the use of Armed Guards to defend against the threat of piracy…”

Who is the course for?
The course is designed for anyone working as, or considering employment as, a Ship Security Officer as well as security operators who wish to conduct maritime security operations including counter piracy.

Course Content
The course covers all mandatory elements with including:

  • ISPS Code
  • Ship Security Assessment and Planning
  • Maritime Security Threats
  • Stowaway, Weapons, Drugs and IED’s
  • SSO & CSO Responsibilities
  • Impact of Terrorism on Maritime Security
  • Maritime Security Levels
  • Security and Surveillance
  • Anti Piracy
  • Port Security and Planning
  • Best Management Practices for Protection Against Somalia Based Piracy (BMP)

Duration
3 consecutive days

Certification
On successfully completing the course and passing the final examination candidates will be issued with an internationally recognised certificate approved by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).
To be eligible for the Full SSO Certificate candidates must meet the requirements laid down by the MCA as follows:
Be able to Evidence 12 months of Sea time (reduced to 3 months for ex service personnel)
If you are unable to evidence the above requirements you will be issued with an interim certificate of attendance for Training as a Ship Security Officer.
In addition, all candidates will be issued with the following certificates

  • Certificate in Designated Security Duties (DSD)
  • Best Management Practices and Protecting Ships from Acts of Piracy

Course Fees
The course can be undertaken on either a residential or non-residential basis and the fees are as follows:

Non Residential: £495 plus VAT including assessment, examination, certification fees and course manuals which include the ISPS Code.

Accommodation for Residential Option: Single rooms are available at £60.00 per person per night including VAT for bed, full breakfast and a three course evening meal.

Also included is free wireless internet in all bedrooms and communal areas together with full use of the Health, Fiitness & Leisue Club for the duration of your stay. Further details can be found on our "Residential Options" page.
